Advantage of film strength - Strength tops list of silage ‘must-haves’

When custom silage operators and end-users talk about what matters most to them, you can expect to hear the word strength a lot. After all, the whole idea is to keep what’s inside away from the harsh elements. At the same time, a thick bag might be strong, but it could also be cumbersome to use. Stacyville, Iowa custom operator Kevin Meyerhofer thinks AT Films has struck the right balance.

“It’s made out of strong resins,” says Meyerhofer, “so you don’t need a lot of thickness to get strength. Other bags might be thicker, but they’re not better.” According to silage supply reseller Claudia Goodman of Monkland, Ontario, strength is an attribute that users of all sizes can appreciate, not just the big guys. That’s just one of the reasons she sells AT Films bags.

“We like the strength of the plastic,” she says. “Some people only do a bag every other year, so strength is important, especially since winter is a big issue around here.”

The advantage of easy to use films - Headache-free bagging lets these operators roll

Whether you’re putting up one bag of silage or many, everyone can agree on one thing: the less time the operation takes, and the smoother it goes, the better. That’s especially true at times when the weather threatens to throw a wrench into your bagging plans.

Mark Wilson, with silage supply reseller Sila Grow in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, believes users with a deadline to meet don’t appreciate surprises. With AT Films silage bags, his customers know exactly what to expect. “It’s a good, easy bag to work with, and they’re always in the box right,” says Wilson. “You just line it up to the machine and you’re good to go.”

While custom operators have the experience and skill to adjust on the go, other users need things to work right the first time. “Other bags we’ve tried are too stiff,” says Vern Van Tilburg of Doon, Iowa, “but the AT Films bags slide on and off a lot better.”

When choosing a silage film, consider long-term reliability

As farmers and custom operators will tell you, silage equipment suppliers tend to come and go. A supplier who seems solid enough today could be out of the business just a few years from now. And where does that leave the customer?

Now consider AT Films. Known previously as AT Plastics, this company has been producing top-quality silage film since 1978. As silage management methods have evolved over the years, AT has consistently met the market’s need for strength, ease of use and superior customer service.

“AT Films’ bags have been a good, consistent product for us over the years,” says custom operator Kevin Meyerhofer of Stacyville, Iowa.

It takes years to acquire the skills needed to bag silage quickly and efficiently. It’s good to know that one silage film supplier has been trusted for the past 30 years, and is committed to the success of its customers for many years to come.

AT Films: your best choice for complete silage solutions

From Iowa to Ontario, from Wisconsin to British Columbia, there’s almost no limit to the possibilities of silage management. With different cropping patterns, various nutritional needs and all kinds of weather to contend with, a custom operator or end-user needs to be ready for anything.

Just ask Mark Wilson of silage equipment reseller Sila Grow in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. His clientele ranges from large commercial producers to custom silage operators to small-scale weekend farmers. “Our customer base is diverse, so we sell bags from 8.0 to 9.0 to 10.0 m,” says Wilson, who sources all three from AT Films.

Whether you’re a reseller or a custom operator, who has time to source products from multiple suppliers? A leader in silage film since 1978, AT Films has expertise in all types and all sizes of silage film: bags, sheeting, bale tubes, lastic tubes, wrap and custom-produced films. When your needs are diverse, and you want to deal with one supplier, AT Films is the proven choice for one-stop silage solutions.

30 years of innovation

In an industry as dynamic and competitive as silage film, the lineup of film suppliers changes almost every year. Over the past three decades, however, one name has become a fixture: AT Films.

As North America’s original supplier of silage film, starting in 1978, AT Films has been responsible for most of the silage poly film innovations that today’s industry takes for granted. For example, AT was the first company to market UV-stabilized formulas to help customers protect their silage investment. Over the years, AT has consistently come to market with innovations that make it more efficient to bag silage, such as automated silage bag folding. When producers needed their silage film to do more and more, AT Films responded with breakthroughs such as memory film bale tubes and super tough film formulations.

What will the next 10 years bring to the field of silage management? Look to the industry’s undisputed leader in innovation, AT Films, for new generations of protection and efficiency.

The choice for custom producers - For custom silage pros, the choice is clear

An individual producer might put up just a handful of bags of silage each year. A custom operator could do hundreds. For these professionals, small changes in efficiency and performance can spell the difference between a good year and a great one.

“We have 20 baggers going, and we’ve tried all the different products, but we use AT Films silage bags,” says Vern Van Tilburg in Doon, Iowa. In his business, many clients want him to handle the silage from beginning to end. Others like to bag their own. He’s fine with that, since he can recommend AT Films’ bags as the right choice for the non-specialist. “There’s nothing more frustrating than having a customer call to say they can’t get the bag to come off,” says Van Tilburg. “The AT Films bags slip off the bagger so easily.”

Custom operator Kevin Meyerhofer of Stacyville, Iowa appreciates the way AT Films meets the needs of the high-volume customer. “The AT bag has a nice, clean fold that I really like,” he says, “and when you’re doing 250 ft. to 300 ft. bags, that’s a big deal.”

Check your warranty: Does your silage film supplier stand by you?

When you make the best product, it only makes sense to offer the most comprehensive warranty. By the same token, when a company is reluctant to offer a warranty, what does that say about the product they’re selling?

Since 1978, AT Films has been a trusted supplier of a broad selection of quality silage films, developing close relationships with top producers, custom operators and resellers. As in any relationship, there can be honest disagreements from time to time. If ever an AT Films silage product falls short of a customer’s expectations, the customer’s needs come first.

“They have a very good warranty,” says Vern Van Tilburg of Doon, Iowa. “There’s no questions asked, they just leave it up to the dealer. Any time we’ve had an issue, the company has been great about standing up to their promise.” Many AT Films silage bags customers have used the products for years, and never had an issue. Still, isn’t it comforting to know you’re covered no matter what?

Choose Strength and Efficiency: Custom operator walks the talk

When a custom silage operator drives into the yard, that’s a welcome sight for any producer. After all, with the custom operator’s professional-grade equipment and years of experience, the producer’s valuable silage crops are in the best possible hands. But have you ever wondered how the pros put up silage when they’re doing it for themselves?

According to custom silage expert Claudia Goodman of Monkland, Ontario, the fundamentals of strength and efficiency apply equally, whether you do a few bags each year or hundreds. "Any new product that comes out, we'll try it,” says Goodman. “But before we recommend bags for our customers, we put the bags to the test at our family's farm, because we wouldn't use them for our customers if we didn't have full confidence in them.”

As Goodman gets to know what a new product can do, she’ll gradually introduce it to her customers. It’s no coincidence that, in six years in business, she’s earned a reputation for quality. “We've probably sold 3,000 bags over that time,” she says. “We also have six baggers of our own that we rent out, so we put up about 150 bags per year for customers. We've had very good success with the AT Films bags.”
